2022
CeXS Technical Report: Inventory of data reduction and analysis software used in high-energy X-ray research at PETRA III
To support researchers gain an overview of the possibilities, and go on to select software of relevance to their own research, CeXS has produced a technical report based on our inventory of synchrotron software.
This inventory catalogs the software programs that have proven to be useful to the Swedish research community that conducts research at the PETRA III synchrotron, including the PETRA III Swedish Materials Science beamline.
Based on publications from 2018, the inventory categorizes the various software programs used in research as either data reduction software for 2D area detector X-ray scattering images or data analysis software for WAXS, SAXS, GIWAXS, GISAXS, and PDF.
Each software program has a short description of its functionality, a note of its developer, links to the original publication describing the scientific method that the software is based upon, as well as the site for downloading the software program.
Annual Report to the Swedish Research Council about Swedish use of PETRA III during 2021
Highlights include:
Beam time proposal submission data shows sustained Swedish research interest in using PETRA III. During 2021, Swedish universities, research institutes and companies submitted 144 beam time proposals. Of these proposals, 41 (28.5%) were for use of the Swedish Material Science beamline.
58 beam times projects were completed.
Of the 52 open access beam times, 38 were granted on the basis of Swedish privileged access.
Despite ongoing COVID-19 restrictions limiting the number of users at beamlines, 173 Swedish users visited PETRA III to undertake measurements, 58 users accessed data at PETRA III. And, a further 17 users accessed PETRA III remotely to undertake beamline measurements.
38 publications were reported to the DOOR system, which is likely to reflect the limited number of beam time projects conducted in 2020 due to the effects of pandemic restrictions.
Briefing to the government investigation on research infrastructures
In May 2020, the Swedish Government initiated an investigation about how to organise and finance Sweden's national research infrastructures. (See this Swedish government's webpage ).
Given the PETRA III Swedish beamline was build by Sweden, and Swedish researchers also have priviledged access to the PETRA III facility, CeXS considered it important to brief the responsible government investigator, Tobias Krantz.

The history of the Swedish beamline and its complementarity to MAX IV and ESS
The importance of Sweden's priviledged access to PETRA III for Swedish research in many fields
Current research use of PETRA III and how material science research contributes to sustainability

The report focused on Sweden's national infrastructures located within Sweden. The report's main finding was that the research infrastructure landscape is technically and organisationally complex, yet flexible. Complexity however limits political steering of the use of infrastructures. With the perspective that infrastructures play an important role in research and innovation policy, it was therefore concluded that there is scope for increasing political steering of infrastructures e.g. via establishing a new authority for overall governance of infrastructures of national importance.
2020

Highlights include:
There were sustained proposal rates, with the Swedish (P21), P03 and P22 beam lines being the most popular: each was requested in approx. 20% of proposals
Despite Covid-19 restrictions, Sweden made the most of PETRA III
102 users made measurements, working with social distancing precautions
Additional users gained access via 1 remote access project and 9 mail in projects
42 projects had beam time, 37 via privileged access with 5 industry projects paying for access
7 of those privileged access projects and 1 industry project used the Swedish beamline
Publications were up
88 papers in 2020 - compared to 66 in 2019 and 53 in 2018
Furthermore, for the future PETRA IV and scientific research, CeXS orchestrated 3 Scientific Instrument Proposals (SiPs), and supported a 4th, setting the scene for leading research at the future PETRA IV
DESY has had an ongoing project for some time about the upgrade of PETRA III to its fourth generation. As part of this process, DESY made a sudden call with a short notice period for Scientific Instrument Proposals (SiPs) – where these SiPs would be used to determine beamline instrument designs at the future PETRA IV.
Given the importance of the long awaited Swedish beamline for our material science community, and the significance of priviledged access to the entire research community, CeXS considered it important to i) inform all Swedish users and key stakeholders about this and ii) engage the materials community in preparing SiPs in order to secure the basis for leading Swedish material science research also in the future.

The Swedish Material Science beamlines first became operational in 2019 and made an immediate impact on Swedish use of PETRA III.
Highlights include:
The Swedish beamline (P21) was the most requested beamline by Swedish researchers
The next most popular beamlines were P22, P03, P64, P02.1, P06, P07
International researchers also saw the value of the Swedish beamline and conducted measurements there
Many Swedish users actually had the chance to make research measurements
200 users visited PETRA III to undertake measurements
76 projects had beam time, of these 62 projects gained access via open and privileged access proposals, 8 during commissioning of the Swedish beamline and 6 industry projects paid for access
