APE for HVAC Aeroacoustic Simulations: Implementation in OpenFOAM and Validation

The Acoustic Perturbation Equations (APE) are a family of equations derived relatively recently to solve the propagation from flow induced acoustic sources, including refraction and convection effects from the mean flow. They are attractive to perform hybrid aeroacoustic simulations in which the flow is resolved using compressible or incompressible CFD, acoustic source terms are derived from the flow, and the acoustic sources are propagated over the mean flow using the APEs. A hybrid aeroacoustic solver was developed at Faurecia Creo for use with incompressible CFD simulations in OpenFOAM. This case study aims at comparing aeroacoustic results using Faurecia Creo’s implementation against published results on a well-known benchmark case of a generic HVAC duct.
