About the KTH Environmental Humanities Laboratory (EHL)

The overall goal of the EHL is to shape a post-disciplinary intellectual environment that combines education, research and graduate training in innovative ways and sets knowledge in the humanities into action to favour sustainable development. The educational programme aims to train a new generation of historians and others to become capable, integrated environmental humanists.

The EHL

The environmental humanities is one of the most dynamic fields in the human sciences. This energy is derived from the increasing demand for human and social knowledge to meet global challenges. The environmental humanities are characterised by their hybrid nature, applying humanities and qualitative social science methods and theories to environmental, nature, and climate questions and their representations in society and culture.

Founded in 2012, the EHL is a global leader in the field, known mainly for its critical approach. We are critical of the power relationships and hierarchies that shape our broader society and its relationships to the more-than-human world and the traditional structures of academic disciplines that shape and control our research.

Since January 2023, the EHL has been a KTH Research Centre based within the Department of Philosophy and History. Our work will build on our history and emphasise developing interdisciplinary connections and collaborations across KTH. We will also look to foster partnerships outside the university with civil society organisations, community groups, governmental organisations, and other public and private institutions to help demonstrate the value of the environmental humanities for a just, green transition.
