On 1 June 2023, a delegation from the National University of Singapore (NUS) visited KTH Campus and Djurö Marine field station, hosted by WaterCentre@KTH.

The NUS delegation was multidisciplinary and was composed of ten students from different programs such as mechanical engineering, data science & analytics, geography, and biomedical engineering, as well as two administrative personnel including Dr Lin Ziqiang Shaun. NUS is considered one of the best universities in Asia, and this event aimed to build further collaboration between NUS and KTH.

A morning session with presentations was organized by WaterCentre@KTH, where researchers from KTH, Stockholm University (SU) and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) presented their work.

Presentations by KTH researchers

From KTH, the director of Watercentre@KTH, Zahra Kalantari, presented the mission, vision and goals of the centre and was the chairperson of the session. Zeynep Cetecioglu Gurol, an associate professor from CBH-KTH, presented her work related to one of her projects on the next generation of wastewater treatment plants. Gunaratna Kuttuva Rajarao, a researcher from CBH-KTH, presented her research and experience about integrated water resource management for sustainable livelihoods. Mariel Perez Zabaleta, a postdoc researcher from CBH-KTH, explained her work on wastewater-based epidemiology, which is a system for the surveillance of pathogens in wastewater.

SEI and SU researchers contributed

Jung-Ching Kan, a research associate from SEI explained her work on predicting drought indicators in Sweden using Google Earth Engine and machine learning approach.

From SU, Jessica Faye Page from the Department of physical geography, who defended her PhD thesis recently, presented her work about urban and regional planning. Elisie Kåresdotter, a doctoral student from the Department of natural geography, showed her research about the history of conflict and cooperation around water.

Pitches by NUS students

After the oral presentations, pitch presentations were given by NUS students. The session topics were diverse but all of them related to water research. After the morning session, the participant exchanged ideas with a light lunch.

The event has been an excellent opportunity to discuss ideas around water, exchange knowledge and experiences, and most important, build future collaboration between NUS and KTH.

Field trip to Djurö Marine Field Station

The morning session was followed by a field trip to Djurö Marine Field Station , where Fredrik Gröndahl, an associate professor at the Department for sustainable development, environmental science and engineering (SEED) at KTH, conducted the excursion and explained the research performed there.
