Lunch seminar on the history of deep sea research

Published Sep 26, 2023

In WaterCentre@KTH's latest lunch seminar, Tirza Meyer - a contemporary historian and postdoctoral researcher in the history of media and environment with a specific focus on the history of ocean governance and environment - spoke about her ongoing book project “Humanoid Oceans”.

The main goal of the project is to understand how human ability to study large ecosystems on a planetary scale has changed our perception of ‘environment’ at large.

In the seminar, Tirza Meyer  spoke about different perceptions about the deep sea ecosystem, e.g. about it's alienness, partly the result of the human observation methods that have distorted specimens when removing them from the pressure of the depths.

While waiting for Tirza Meyer's forthcoming book, you can read a book she recommended in the seminar: Below the Edge of Darkness by Edith Widder, available in PDF format here .
