FEK3154 Topics in Electromagnetic Interactions with Microsystems IV 3.0 credits

The course is building up on the third course of this course series (FEK3153) and can only be taken if the first course has been completed successfully. The course is arranged as a journal club seminar series with 2 (academic) hours long units once a month. Every unit consists of the presentation and analysis of at least one selected journal paper of relevance to the participants. Every unit has a participant in a dedicated presenter role, and another participant in the moderator role. There is a rotation scheme for these roles between the different events. The journal papers under discussion will need to be approved by the course responsible at least a week before the meeting. At the event, the presenter is presenting the paper, including its background, findings and conclusions. Then there are two discussion rounds in which all participants gets their turns. In the first discussion round, the technical content of the journal is analyzed and discussed, and this round is held like a question&answering session interacting with the presenter. In the second round, the participants discuss the non-technical aspects of the paper: structure, completeness, language, quality of figures, appropriateness of abstracts, substantiation of results, appropriateness of conclusions. As a homework, each participating student must submit a paper analysis before the event. As this is an advanced course round, it is expected that the students have more advanced competence in paper analysis, gained from the first course round, and are able to apply that to scientific papers. In contrast to the previous course instances, in this course round the focus is on review articles. For this purpose, the differences in writing and analyzing review articles as compared to original scientific publications will be emphasized.
