FAK3145 Research Communication 7.5 credits

We discuss the majority of research communication modes, their reasons and their consequences, internally and externally. They include conference participation, paper proposals, reviews, conference presentations, popular communication and interaction,

popular presentations and texts. We continuously discuss issues of style and genre, and how to adapt and adjust to different audiences and genres.

Peer feedback is an important part of the course as we focus on the process and tools behind academic writing.

After completing this course the students should be able to reflect upon and critically assess research communication. Furthermore the will be able to

- write an abstract for an international conference

- present their research at a conference

- plan and partly write an article for a scientific journal

- review an academic book for a scientific journal or similar

- present their own research for a non-academic audience through a popular science article , or similar.

Eligible applicants are students who meet the requirements for admission to graduate/PhD studies in history or other humanities and social sciences. We recommend that students have taken "Introduction to PhD training" or otherwise acquired the equivalent knowledge.

Students should have completed a few years of training in order to have research of

their own to work with.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Active participation (80 %) in seminars and written examination in the form of an independent paper proposal for a conference, review, conference presentation, popular presentation or text.
