Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The first design studio project in Year 1 utilizes the physical model as a tool for exploring fundamental concepts in architectural design with a focus on the relation between geometry, structure, and spatial relationships. By making, documenting, reflecting on, and reworking, students develop generative methods for studying composition—how structures are put together, how components form a whole, and how to work with scale—and relations of size and scope. Architectural design must make use of material and sensory qualities as well as the motion of forces. At the same time, or in a second exercise, students develop two-dimensional notational techniques for describing, analyzing, and presenting their physical models.

The project is divided into two parts.

Intended learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • use the model as a tool
  • present and describe how space, structure and scale/size are interrelated in their own work
  • examine and explain the composition of structure in relation to their own work
  • describe the properties and sensory qualities of materials
  • understand and use the concepts introduced to describe and discuss architectural qualities
  • compile their work into a presentation and reflect on their results and working process

Examination and completion

Grading scale

P, F

Examination

  • APRO - Architecture project, 8.0 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Other requirements for final grade

General:

The examiner, in consultation with the other course instructors, assesses how well the student meets the learning objectives based on the following four components:

1. Work process, project development, research questions, and documentation of these.

2. Ability and skill in using and handling relevant representations, techniques, and other design tools based on lectures, assignments, and learning objectives.

3. Final submission: the project’s qualities, its architectural and artistic exploration.

4. Reflection on one’s own learning.

The project must be completed within the course’s specified timeframe.

To receive a passing grade, students must also complete all assignments and maintain 80% attendance at lectures, seminars, tutorials, and reviews.

Course module supplementation means that a student who has received a grade of F and is deemed to be close to meeting the requirements for a passing grade of P may be given the opportunity to complete supplementary work to achieve a passing grade. The course examiner decides whether supplementation is possible.

The supplementary assignment is designed based on the learning objectives the student has not achieved. The student shall be given 15 working days to complete the supplementary work. After that, supplementary work may not be done, in accordance with KTH’s guidelines on course syllabi, grading systems, and examination.

Examiner

Ethical approach

  • All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
  • In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
  • In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
