Teaching during the pandemic

The KTH president has decided that campus will be open in the fall 2021 and that teaching should be done at campus if it is pedagogically motivated to do so. At the KTH intranet there is quite a lot of information on Corona regulations and how to teach during the pandemic

E-learning - services and support for teachers (same in Swedish).

Viggo's recommendations to TCS teachers regarding teaching in the fall 2021

Most of the students will not be fully vaccinated until the end of period 1. Therefore, I think that we should not require students to be at campus during period 1.

  • Offer students to do every mandatory course activity as a distance activity.
  • If you choose to give a non-mandatory course activity only at campus (without possibility for the students to attend it digitally), then it should be physically possible for every student of the course to attend. For example, you need to book a lecture in a large enough room.
  • In lecture halls, only a third of the seats may be used, and in the classrooms only half of the usual number of seats may be used (the number of seats used in written exams). In the computer lab rooms, every second chair has been removed.
  • If you have more students than will fit in the lecture hall, you need to give the lecture either digitally or using hybrid teaching.
  • If you have a course with several groups (övningsgrupper), you might consider to have some of them at campus and some of them digitally.
  • You need to clearly specify in the course information if the lectures, tutorials and labs will be given digitally, at campus or both.
  • For digital lectures, tutorials and labs you may keep the booked rooms to let students sit there when Zooming/working, but in this case you need to be extra clear in the course information, because the information in the schedule is misleading. (I do not know if it is possible to enter both "Digital" and a room in the schedule at the same time.)

Borrowing a drawing pad

If you need a Wacom Bamboo Slate Large drawing pad to be able to simulate a black board in Zoom, you can borrow one from Viggo's office. If you have TAs who give tutorials digitally and will need a Wacom, they can borrow one from Viggo's office.

The Bamboo Slate can be used with Windows computers, Mac computers, Iphones and Androids using Bluetooth. You need to download the Inkspace app. For Mac users: you should be able to install the official drivers (scroll down a bit on this page), and then it should be possible to install the Inkspace application from the desktop app that's included with the drivers.

Exams

No proctored written exams or partial exams (KS) should be given in TCS courses. We need to permanently replace proctored exams by unproctored exams and oral exams. Viggo is happy to discuss how to replace ordinary exams with alternative assessment.

Preparation time

Digital teaching is not a new and unknown area anymore. The extra preparation time for digital teaching for TAs in 2020/2021 will not be used from 2021/2022. We return to the ordinary preparation time coefficients, see the web pages "Assistenter" and "Doctoral students" at the TCS Teaching group web. Please inform your TAs about this.
