FAQ and Safety
Who can use the studios?
Middla is accessible for all during office hours. Other studios require card-access approved by studio manager, faculty contact or researcher contact. For 24/7 access to Middla and to use the equipment, student's are required to complete the Middla Access Course in Canvas. The studio manager or middla researcher contact must supervise first usage of laser cutter or 3d printer.
"Private" usage
Materials provided by the studio are only to learn, experiment and complete coursework.
Students and researchers within MID can use the equipment with their own, approved, material for personal, non-commercial projects where this does not interfere with other use mentioned above. The printers may not be booked for such projects. In the case of non-personal, non-commercial projects for, e.g. a student union or similar organisation, then a contribution of a roll of 2.85mm filament is requested.
Rules for all MID Studios
- A clean space is a happy and safe space - if you take something out, put it away, if you drop something, pick it up, plug it in, plug it out, you get the idea. Items left out are placed on the "hack me" shelf for public usage. Use storage boxes marked with your course number and kth userid. One week after course ends the contents of the box become property of Middla.
Budget 15 minutes before leaving to tidy up as best you can. Use the full 15 minutes, tidy up one more mess than you made, none of us are perfect. Don't throw food waste in the bins inside the space, the cleaners can't get to them. - Respect the space and each other - The studios are a common space and you are part of someone elses experience; we choose what culture we build so say "hi" and "bye" to eachother! Obviously the KTH ethical code of conduct applies and the space is an *ism-free space.
Treat the equipment and materials with care; we expect you to break stuff, learning by burning, but do try to avoid damage by googling best practices and methods first. Use the right tools and materials for the right job, see the best practices link on the left. Let the studio manager know if something is broken, or has run out so we can take care of it as soon as possible. Use the studio log in the left menu when logged in. If you are the last to leave the lab please check the windows and that, for example, no glue-guns are left plugged in, turn off the main lights and close the door.
Safety at MID Studios
Dress for success - use provided protective gear such as safety goggles and hearing protection. Tie up long hair, remove loose clothing, tuck away any jewelry or hoodie-strings.
Ventilate - Turn on the ventilation at the laser and the soldering stations. Weekends and after 5pm, activate the ventilation with the override button above the blue exit-button by the entry door.
Chemicals and Lithium batteries - May not be stored in your box, but must be kept in the chemical cabinet and a mail sent to mid-studios@kth.se. The same is true for aerosol cans. There is no spray-painting or similar indoors at MID.
Be aware of your surroundings - pull the blade back into box-cutters when you put them down, do not walk behind people using power-tools and don't distract them, be careful where you point that heat-gun, no running with scissors ;)
Emergency exits are the entrance door and a door at the far right end of the corridor as you leave each studio, each marked with green exit signs.
Fire extinguishers are located within the Middla studio and in the corridor, by the entrance door and at the left end of the corridor as you leave each studio. Their location is marked with a red square sign. Those marked "koldioxid" (CO2) are best suited to electrical/electronic/liquid fires and those marked "skum" (foam) are better suited to fires on wood, clothing, furniture, etc. Very short film on how to use fire extinguisher here.
First aid station including eye-wash is located at the left end of the corridor as you leave each studio.
The emergency services can be reached by phone at 112 if needed, and the KTH security line is 08-790 7700 for anything that doesn't require blue-light services. Please save this number in your phone, it is available 24/7 and can give further advice.
Prepare for emergencies with the KTH Crisis Information portal.
