The Role of Edited Handbooks in Institutionalizing a Field and Reflections on the Process of Putting them Together

In this seminar, I will discuss the role edited volumes, such as a handbook, play in disciplinary fields. I will also share the process of putting an edited handbook together using my experience with CHEER, the Cambridge Handbook of Engineering Education Research (2014), and a new follow-up volume I am currently in the process of editing. Each volume has over 35 chapters and over 70 authors from across institution and countries.

I will discuss how the field of engineering education has changed over time, including how it has started to interact more with computing education, and talk about new and emerging sub-subareas within the field. Finally, this reflection will touch upon differences in the field across countries and how that shapes research and practice.

One of the aims of this seminar is to open up the "black-box" of how an edited volume comes together and the practical decisions and actions that shape the process. Over time the publishing process is moving increasing towards open access to content and I will also talk about what this means, in practice, for publishing.
