What to study?

You decide the specialisation (master’s programme) according to your interests. You have some freedom in your course choices, but there are also some requirements that need to be fulfilled to obtain your degree. You are welcome to study at KTH for two years (or even more if necessary). However, many double degree students want to pass all requirements for the degree in 1.5 years, which is possible if you plan your studies well. Please also check what is required by your home university in terms of the time at the host university.

The education programmes
At KTH you will belong to one of the five schools at KTH, the School of Engineering Sciences (SCI) and you will be enrolled in one of our education programmes in engineering. Please note that you will not be admitted to a Master’s Programme, even though you will take most courses from one. Depending on your specialisation you will either belong to the degree programme in Engineering Physics (Swedish: Teknisk fysik) or in Vehicle Engineering (Farkostteknik). If you plan on specialising in Aerospace, Engineering Mechanics, Sustainable Energy, Vehicle or Naval you will be registered as a Vehicle Engineering student. If you specialise in Physics, Math or Nuclear you will be registered as an Engineering Physics student.

Minimum requirements in credit units for the double degree:

  • Technical/science courses, 60 ECTS of technical courses at advanced level.
  • Swedish language courses 4 levels and/or elective courses, 30 ECTS credit (for example if you begin with a higher level of Swedish you can choose an elective course instead). For the double degree you need to pass the fourth level Swedish B1/B2.
  • Final Degree Project, 30 ECTS Note that only completed courses will be valid for your degree.
  • You will only be able to take one extra course (a maximum of about 127.5 credits).

Please note, some universities follow another study plan (TUM physics and mathematics, Darmstadt and Politecnico di Milano).

Darmstadt

  • 60 technical credits at advanced level + passing Swedish B1/B2 (KTH)
  • 30 credits at master’s level at Darmstadt (will later be transferred to KTH)
  • 30 ECTS degree project (supervisor at both universities, 30 credits degree project examined at Darmstadt, transferred to KTH)

TUM – Physics

  • 30 credits of technical courses + 30 credits of Swedish language courses, passing Swedish B1/B2
  • 30 credits project course
  • Final degree project 30 ECTS

 TUM – Mathematics

  • 60 technical credits at advanced level + passing Swedish B1/B2 (KTH)
  • 30 credits of master level courses (TUM)
  • Degree project 30 ECTS (examiner and supervisor at KTH)

Milano

  • 90 ECTS of technical courses at advanced level (plus Swedish language, passing B1/B2) at KTH
  • Thesis work 30 ECTS (Milano, will be transferred to KTH.)
