Examination

Final grades

require performing successfully on the:

  • Laboratory tasks - during the course (5 lab sessions, 5 topics), 2.0 credits, grade scale: Pass/Fail
  • Final examination - at the end of the course, 4.0 credits, grade scale: A, B, C, D, E, F

Laboratory tasks

Lab sessions are run throughout the course. Lab instructions should be downloaded from Canvas and studied before the actual lab time. They encompass five sets of experiments:

  1. Polarisation and 3D imaging.
  2. Michelson interferometer.
  3. Fourier optics.
  4. Optical microscope.
  5. Quantum entanglement.

Each lab session lasts four hours (from 8:00 until 12:00 or from 13:00 until 17:00). Note that the lab starts at the full hour, not a 'quarter past'.

The labs take place in Albanova. You should meet your lab teacher at the Albanova reception. Please be on time. Your lab teacher will bring you to the lab room.

Final examination

The final written exam will take five hours. You are allowed to bring a simple scientific calculator, books and handwritten and printed notes, including old exams and solutions. You are not allowed to bring a graphing calculator, a computer or phone or any other communication device.

At the written exam you will get questions about the topics discussed in the lectures, the labs, the problem sessions and the covered chapters of the book (Hecht, Optics, 5th ed.).
