Course description
EN2401 - Image and Video Processing
6 ECTS credits, Period 2
Optional course for E4, and the Master Program in Wireless Systems. Other students are also welcome, but may need a clearance to have the course included in their degree.
The course is given in English.
Description
This course provides an introduction to principles of digital image and video processing. After passing this course, participants should be able to use point operations, choose appropriate color spaces, perform basic image segmentation and image filtering, implement multiresolution and image matching techniques, video filters, and basic algorithms for image and video compression. Homework exercises and a course project will help students to gain hands-on experience.
Syllabus
Fundamentals of image processing: vision, physics of light, image acquisition by sensors, image sampling and quantization. Spatial and frequency-domain based image enhancement. Image restoration: degradation models and noise models, spatial filtering methods, model estimation. Color image processing: color models, color transformations, color enhancement, color segmentation. Multi-resolution processing and wavelets. Image and video compression fundamentals: lossy and lossless compression, motion estimation, image and video coding standards.
Time
The course is given during period 2
Lectures: 24h, tutorials: 24h
Prerequisites
EQ1220 Signal Theory or equivalent
Course requirements
Written examination 34%, homework 33%, course project 33%
Grading
Each home assignment is graded on the ECTS scale. To pass the course and get a final grade, you need to pass all home assignments, and also pass the exam.
