Seminar 4

Part I

Students studying at KTH

Complete the reflections for the courses that you have completed up until now. These reflections are in the form of surveys. You find these under surveys. There is one reflection/survey per course. If a course that you took is missing let me know and I can add a survey for it.

Students studying elsewhere

Look at the surveys for the courses that the students studying at KTH will use. Provide a brief description of the courses that you study (cut from web for example) and answer the questions from the sruveyf or the course.

Part II

This part deals with your progression and how you perceive that the coures that you have taken have helped with this. Progression refers to building on your previous skills and knowledge in the learning process.

Write a reflectiion (500-600 words not including the below explanation...) about your progression.

  1. List the courses that completed so far (this would be the ones you worked with in Part I)
  2. Discuss / analyze your own progression towards the following three objectives in your education and relate this to the courses that you have taken. How do the courses build on each other and how to they help to fulfill these objectives? What parts of these objectives do you think are fulfill well and not so well? What is missing? Too much of something?
The text in parentheses is "definition" of what must be fulfilled to fulfill the corresponding objective (in bold).

  • Knowledge and understanding (demonstrate knowledge and understanding in their main field of study, including both broad knowledge in the field and substantially deeper knowledge of certain parts of the field, together with deeper insight into current research and development work; and - demonstrate deeper methodological knowledge in their main field of study)
  • Skills and abilities (demonstrate an ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and to analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations, even when limited information is available; - demonstrate an ability to critically, independently and creatively identify and formulate issues and to plan and, using appropriate methods, carry out advanced tasks within specified time limits, so as to contribute to the development of knowledge and to evaluate this work; - demonstrate an ability to clearly present and discuss their conclusions and the knowledge and arguments behind them, in dialogue with different groups, orally and in writing, in national and international contexts; and - demonstrate the skill required to participate in research and development work or to work independently in other advanced contexts.)
  • Judgement and approach (demonstrate an ability to make assessments in their main field of study, taking into account relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects, and demonstrate an awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work; - demonstrate insight into the potential and limitations of science, its role in society and people’s responsibility for how it is used; and - demonstrate an ability to identify their need of further knowledge and to take responsibility for developing their knowledge.)

Note: Name your assignment as

If you cannot attend the seminar

You need to read the reflections from the students in your group and make an overall analysis. That is, read them all and look for common factors. Where are the strengths and weaknesses? What would your recommendations be based on this if you were to make adjustments to get better fulfillment of the objectives? Are all part of the objectives equally important? How big is the variation in how people consider that the fulfill the objectives? If there are differences do you think this is because people came in with different backgrounds? Is it because people perceive their own fulfillment differently (ie person A and B actually have exacty the same knowledge, skills, etc but perceive it differently)?
