Abstract:¶
In the tutorial, the principle of modularity is used to outline the form and functionality of different multilevel voltage and current source converter topologies. This tutorial addresses the challenges and issues relating to the implementation of multilevel converters for high power applications and specifically on HVDC systems. Commutation cells with solid state devices and the primary energy storage are synthesized as building blocks which are contributing to the modularity of the systems. By various topological combinations, using different basic commutation cells, this tutorial will offer a comprehensive view on a variety of modular multilevel converter (MMC) topologies. Participants to this tutorial will gain practical insight into modular multilevel converter realization together with an industrial viewpoint on challenges as well as the future trends for HVDC applications.¶

Speaker Bio:¶
Alireza Nami (S’07-M’10) received the B.Eng. and M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Mazandaran University, Iran, in 2004 and 2006, respectively and the Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Queensland University of Technology, Australia in 2010. From 2010 to 2011 he was a post-doctoral research fellow at Global Center of Excellence at Kumamoto University in Japan. He is currently a Senior Scientist with the ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden. His research interests include power electronics converters and their applications for HVDC and FACTS converters and control, grid connected, renewable energy systems, motor drives, and pulsed power supplies.¶

Title: Functional Modeling of Modular Multilevel Converters¶

Abstract: The security of supply is becoming an important concern of the energy delivery in 16.7 Hz railway networks. This situation calls for the improvement of the interconnection with the 50 Hz grid and creates a demand for ancillary services, especially with respect to power quality issues. In a first step, this talk develops the case of Switzerland and presents two prospective approaches which have been proposed during recent research projects, making use of the rolling stock and/or power electronics-based substations to address mainly the issue of low system voltage. In a second step, the talk will focus on the second approach, considering Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) with embedded energy storage as the means to supply the proposed services. In this context, the talk will present an approach to re-think the control design of MMCs, based on a functional modelling formalism and allowing to develop the control in a systematic manner. The outcomes of such an approach will be developed and exemplified with laboratory test results.¶

Title: Power electronics converters for particle accelerators - design and operation challenges at CERN¶

Abstract: Particles accelerators require dedicated energy conversion systems to accelerate and guide particles beams. For this purposes power electronics converters are used to supply electro-magnets (warm and superconducting) and Radio Frequency equipment’s such as klystrons. This leads to a wide variety of custom designed current or voltage power converters, from the Ampère to the 100kA or from the 10V to the 100kV ranges respectively. Furthermore cycled or pulsed power converters are required for energy and/or equipment’s volume minimisation. The design specification often require special and challenging requirements which are specific to the particles accelerators domain. For instance current precision in the order of the ppm (part per million), tight EMC specifications or operation in a radioactive environment are typical power converters requirements. After a brief introduction on particles accelerators basics, the seminar presents all the different aspects and challenges for the design of such power converters. Design example of high current and/or high voltage power electronic converters are systematically presented.¶

This presentation is concentrated on three principal axes around Modular Multilevel Conversion. In a first step, the impact of grid asymmetries on the operation and capacitive energy storage design of an MMC is treated. In a second step, the integration of BESS elements into the submodules of MMC-based topologies is studied, along with the development of associated generalized control algorithms. Finally, an application example case driven from large scale Ultra-Fast EV Charging Stations based on the recently proposed Modular Multilevel Power Electronic Transformer (M2PET) is discussed.¶
