Romain Rumple gets ‘Supervisor of the Year’ Award
This year’s ‘Supervisor of the Year’ award goes to Romain Rumpler, associate professor at SCI. This is the third year the Ph.D. Chapter at THS has awarded the prize. Congratulations!
What does the ‘Supervisor of the Year’ award mean to you?
The award came as a great and pleasant surprise to me, but provides the best feedback I could get that my doctoral students are thriving in their environment and studies. It is truly motivating to know that they appreciate my efforts to provide them support and that they also highly value the way we are collaborating.
How do you view your role as a supervisor?
I perceive my role as a supervisor as a mentor in the development of PhD students towards their future as the next leaders in academia or industry, In that sense I try to be at their side to help them in several aspects: scientific challenges and orientations, network and collaboration development, and emotional or practical support along the way. I am in particular aware that the journey as a PhD student is made of ups and downs, and I try to be very careful not to miss the more difficult moments when my support is especially needed. It is a great privilege and rewarding assignment.
