About me
Position and Duties
I am Professor in Electronic Systems Design (with specialization in Dependable and Autonomous Systems) at Division of Electronics and Embedded Systems, Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS).
I was appointed as Program Director for the Embedded Systems master program at KTH in 2019 and have been taking this role since then. I am also Director of Studies at Division of Electronics and Embedded Systems.
My name in Chinese is 鲁中海.
Research
My research spans from Network-on-Chip/System-on-Chip, Computer System Architecture, Electronic Design Automation, Embedded Systems, and recently to Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) of Power Electronics. Currently, my research group is working on in-network processing and embedded intelligence. With In-Network Processing, we engage network-on-chip in computation for performance and power co-optimization, by transforming a traditional "passive" network into an innovative "active" network. With Embedded Intelligence, we focus on both accelerating AI algorithms in hardware and applying AI algorithms for addressing outstanding problems in network-on-chip, computer architecture, and embedded systems.
I received research gifts from Intel Corporation in 2011, 2012, 2013, and secured individual grants from the Swedish Research Council twice (the starting grant in 2014 and project grant in 2020).
I have made some contributions to the research fields, currently over 200 scientific papers (roughly 40% in journals and 60% in peer-reviewed conferences). My research papers were nominated as Best Paper Candidate at HPCA’2018, NOCS'2013 and ICCAD’2009. I received the Best Paper Award at NOCS’2015 and EU HiPEAC (High Performance and Embedded Architecture and Compilation) Paper Awards. Recently our paper in IEEE Transactions on Computers was recognized as Featured Paper, September 2020. In the 4th Asia Pacific Conference of the Prognostics and Health Management Society (PHMAP 2023, Tokyo), our two papers won two awards, one receiving Best Paper Award and the other receiving Young Pioneer Award.
My publication list appears in the online computer science bibliography (DBLP) and Google Scholar.
I serve as Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Architecture and Code Optimization (TACO). I was honored to be a General Chair for HiPEAC’2017 held in Stockholm, TPC Chair for NOCS’2017 held in Seoul, South Korea, and General Chair for NOCS’2018 held in Turin, Italy.
Teaching (New course development)
To introduce AI into our master program, I have spent huge efforts spanning a few years to develop two new AI courses: IL2230 Hardware Architectures for Deep Learning, and IL2233 Embedded Intelligence. These two courses are currently the only two embedded hardware/software related AI courses in the program.
Educational Background
I received BSc. from Beijing Normal University in June 1989, and earned MSc. in June 2002 and PhD. in March 2007 from KTH Royal Institute of Technology. After PhD, I conducted postdoctoral research at KTH. In October 2012, I received MBA in Innovation and Growth from the Business and Innovation Development unit, University of Turku, Finland.
