Reliable and Safe Train Positioning

On the way to sustainable transport, we need to make as many shifts from road or air to rail as possible. In my research I focus on estimating train positions without the need for trackside equipment, making the process more efficient and cost-effective. By expoiting the potential of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) onboard trains, I aim to improve accuracy and reliability in railway operations.

In statistical sensor fusion the combination of GNSS and IMU has been established for many years; the challenge lies in adapting these solutions to meet the unique specifics of the railway environment, ensuring that trains can be tracked effectively without external infrastructure. A key aspect of my research involves the design of a practical track map that enhances positioning precision and minimizes uncertainty in real-world applications. By considering probabilistic track maps I propose positioning algorithms that meet high safety requirements while keeping computational costs low.

I am originally from Germany, where I was born into a family of railway employees and train enthusiasts. I hold a double degree in Electrical Engineering, one from TU Darmstadt, Germany, with specialization on sensor technology, and one from KTH with focus on medical technology. Both tracks were proven to be useful on my current PhD journey to safe and reliable rail transportation in Europe. I you want to find out more about my recent results, contact me.
