I work as a postdoc at the Department of Industrial Biotechnology, where I study the unusual and fascinating metabolism of Clostridium thermocellum, an anaerobic cellulolytic thermophilic bacterium. C. thermocellum is incredibly efficient at degrading cellulose and therefore has great industrial potential for the production of biofuels, primarily ethanol, and other commodity chemicals from lignocellulose, e.g. agricultural waste.
Previous research includes the study of the central metabolism of the only known thermophilic succinic acid producer, Clostridium thermosuccinogenes, and the molecular biology of the hyperthermophilic Archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus.
