Om mig

William Hearn completed his undergraduate degree in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto, followed by a master’s degree in Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. He then earned his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology (2018–2023).

After his doctoral studies, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Paul Scherrer Institute (2023–2025) before joining KTH Royal Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral researcher at the Hultgren Laboratory.

At KTH, he is involved with the CeXS and NEXT Centers, conducting research on:

  • The development and implementation of advanced characterization methods at large-scale facilities.

  • Investigating the relationship between structure and properties of materials at both the micro- and macro-levels using in-situ/ex-situ techniques.

Research Interests:

  • Phase transformations in metals during rapid solidification

  • Martensitic microstructures and related phase transformations in Fe-based alloys

  • Additive manufacturing and processing of Fe-based alloys

  • Leveraging experiments at large-scale facilities to understand processing–microstructure–property relationships in materials
