Associate Professor Dilip Khatiwada holds a Ph.D. and a Docent Degree in Energy Technology from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. His research provides insights into the sustainability of renewable energy, decision support tools such as life cycle assessment (LCA), energy systems optimization, and their potential roles in the mitigation of climate change, improved energy security, and sustainable development in different development contexts, as well as methodological contributions for assessing the sustainability in connection with energy and climate policies. Dilip is a mechanical engineer with two Master's Degrees in Sustainable Energy Engineering & Public Administration/Policy (with a major in development studies).
Dilip has around 25 years of work experience in several private, public, and international development agencies. He held several positions such as manager at a multinational private company, assistant spokesperson at the Ministry of Environment, component manager at an environmental project of the Danish International Development Agency, the national focal person at the Regional Air Quality Project, a national specialist at Asian Development Bank (ADB)'s sponsored water supply and sanitation project, plant manager of sewage treatment plants, and under-secretary (technical) at the government of Nepal. Additionally, he has undertaken several national and international training programs on project development and management, renewable energy technologies, bioenergy systems, and cleaner production.
Dilip has worked as a visiting researcher at the Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE) in Brazil and spent research periods at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria and the Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Environment, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in the USA. Dilip has also spent a research &teaching period as a visiting Professor at the Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S), The University of Tokyo in Japan.
His current research focuses on the sustainability assessment of energy systems, biobased economy, life cycle assessment, and decarbonization strategies.
Dilip has contributed to more than 35 peer-review journal papers and book chapters, a few popular science articles, and presented/participated in various international energy and environmental/sustainability forums/workshops.
Research Interests: renewable energy, climate change strategies (mitigation and adaptation), energy and development, advanced transport fuels, GHG accounting, sustainability assessment, dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA), bio-based economy, systems optimization, nexus assessment, energy & climate policies
