Jan Kunnas, Senior Researcher in forest policy at the University of Eastern Finland, will come to the EHL to present his fresh book Skogen (The Forest)(SLS/Appell Förlag). Kunnas argues that a major challenge for forest policy is the long-time perspective it must operate within. The forest industry operates from one economic quarter to the next, but the quarter of the forest can easily span 25 years, as the cycle time of the cultivated forest, from planting to final felling, can often be around a hundred years. From a natural forest perspective, the time depth is even longer; here we must think in terms of hundreds of years. For all our decisions concerning the forests and their use, we therefore need a time perspective that goes far beyond our normal decision horizon. A better knowledge of the history of forests can provide this long-term perspective.

Jan Kunnas’s seminar kicks of this year’s Crosscuts, EHL’s film festival for film and text, where our 2024 edition is exploring “forests”. We will be screening several documentaries on forests followed by conversations with researchers, artists and activists. The fourth edition of Crosscuts will be on 6 and 7 November 2024, and the finalised program will be published here .
