NIES involves scholars from a number of European countries and North America. Many of these contacts come from networks in American Studies and literary studies to which a number of core NIES members belong. A major effort has been made to recruit leading international researchers, particularly in the fields literary and cultural studies, environmental history and landscape studies. Research fields represented in this group include: Literary Studies, Art History, Ecosemiotics and Cultural Studies.
