For the first time this year, NAVET will participate at the Baltic Sea Festival with interactive installations and video project.
Come and try our installations at Berwaldhallen on August 25, 28, 29 and 31, 2024!

Interactive sonification for making sense of Baltic Sea vessel traffic and its environmental impact

The health of the Baltic Sea is under heavy human-induced pressures exacerbated by climate change. About 2000 vessels traffic the Baltic Sea every day.

Sound can be used for communicating several dimensions and their evolution simultaneously and over time. This property makes it possible to represent in an intuitive way the variation in time of complex data such the presence of thousands of boats trafficking the Baltic Sea, their characteristics and their impact on the environment.
We propose the use of sound in an interactive installation for raising awareness about the impact of vessel traffic on the health situation of the Baltic Sea.
Sound has the power of communicating emotions overcoming cultural barriers in an immediate and intuitive way. With an interactive map of the Baltic Sea, incorporating interactive sonification of vessel data, it is possible to communicate both positive and negative emotions in relation to vessel traffic emissions in the Baltic Sea.
We make use of Interactive Sonification, a technique for representing data with sound. In this installation data of the vessels, their characteristics and the pollution they generate with their emissions in the environment are communicated through sound.

What the audience can expect to experience at Berwaldhallen
The installation offers two ways for experiencing the environmental impact of Baltic Sea vessel traffic. Participants can either watch and listen to an audio-video recording of a (user’s) session, using a tools for the interactive sonification of the Baltic Sea vessel traffic, created by KTH/NAVET , or directly explore and navigate with their senses an interactive map of the Baltic Sea traffic and its effect on the environment.
