NOvel RUBber blends for Tyres with a REduced Environmental impacT, for a better LIFE (NORUBTREET 4 LIFE)

NORUBTREET_4_LIFE aims to address EU regulations banning used tyres as secondary raw materials in children's playgrounds and sports fields due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) health risks.

Project facts

Funded by: European Commission LIFE-2023-PLP

Partners: University of Trento (Italy), Università degli Studi di Milano (Italy), University of Groningen (Netherlands), KTH - Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (Stockholm, Sweden)

Duration: 2024-2026

Aims and objectives

NORUBTREET_4_LIFE aims to address EU regulations banning used tyres as secondary raw materials in children's playgrounds and sports fields due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) health risks.

The project will develop a closed-loop recycling process for tyres, creating new rubber blends that are:

• fully compliant with performance standards,

• free of PAHs,

• reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30% compared to virgin material production.

The project will demonstrate recycling end-of-life tyres by blending recycled and virgin rubber to produce tyre treads with a projected 25% Net Present Cost reduction. The new PAH-free materials will undergo comprehensive testing to validate functional properties and emissions behavior. The consortium will monitor gaseous emissions, volatile components, and airborne particulate matter, anticipating future EURO 7 standard requirements.
