Postdoc in X-ray and neutron characterization of metallic material

School of Industrial Engineering and Management at KTH

Job description

At the Department of Materials Science, we offer a postdoctoral position in synchrotron light and neutron characterization of metallic engineering materials to increase the understanding of these materials and their processes. In this way, we want to enable green transitions in industry where new materials and process solutions can be designed with the help of the fundamental understanding that is generated. Large-scale infrastructures generating synchrotron light and neutrons enable very efficient studies of material processes in real time during manufacture and use. And real-time studies mean that the understanding of mechanisms that control the behavior of materials can be improved and then used for new material innovations. For example. we work on improving metallic materials used in the electrification of the automotive industry, hydrogen-tolerant metallic materials that are required for the transition to a fossil-free energy system with hydrogen as an important energy carrier, and the design of metallic materials that are better suited for production from recycled materials while maintaining high performance.

So-called in-situ/in-operando and high-throughput measurements are particularly important in this project and the postdoc will both work on developing measurement methodology and data analysis for these types of experiments and also work with the applications, i.e. better understanding of the microstructure and mechanical properties of specific metallic materials. More specifically, the postdoc will work with phase transformations in metallic materials and deformation of metallic materials.

The postdoc position should be very interesting for researchers in materials science with a characterization profile and the desire to deepen their knowledge and expand their capacity in the field of physical metallurgy and material characterization. Furthermore, the postdoctoral fellow will have an excellent opportunity to collaborate closely with academic and industrial partners in Sweden and internationally, as well as to contribute to research at large-scale infrastructures (synchrotron light facilities).

What we offer
