Doctoral student in nuclear materials science

School of Engineering Sciences at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Physics

We are looking for two PhD students to work with advanced nuclear materials. The two PhD projects are aimed at a) modeling the behavior and properties of new coatings for light water reactor cladding tubes using atomistic simulations; and b) to study the radiation damage physics of advanced steels using experiments and modelling, and in particular to develop an experimental environment to irradiate new materials at low temperatures and observe their behaviour.

The two PhD students will collaborate nationally as well as internationally with several different partner universities and companies and both projects will be connected to the Nuclear Materials Platform NuMaP. The students will be part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and students.

The projects contain both modeling and experiments, directly or indirectly. Multiscale modeling based on electronic structure calculations will form the basis of the theoretical part and will be compared experimentally with the help of ion irradiation and detailed material investigation. Some materials are developed within the projects.

Supervision: The doctoral students are proposed to be supervised by Professor Pär Olsson in collaboration with Dr. Antoine Claisse (Westinghouse) and Dr. Faris Sweidan. Decisions are made on admission
