Course development
On this page, you can track the course's development over time. Once the course analysis is published, data for each course offering is displayed, including the number of registered students, course results, and planned improvements for the next session. All course syllabuses and course memos are shown on the page Archive.
The information can help prospective, current, and former students with course selection, or to follow up on their own participation. Teachers, course coordinators, examiners, program directors, and others can use the page as a resource for course development.
2025
Spring 2025-60467 ( Start date 14 Jan 2025, English )
Changes planned for the next course offering
A larger change and restructuring of the Optimization courses offered by the math department is currently under development. But, these changes will not be fully implemented in this course until the course in spring 2027 (syllabus for 2026 is already set) . The goal is to make sure we maximize the benefits and learning outcomes for the students, and make sure the course material and topics covered are all relevant and up-to-date. For example, we want to ensure there is a suitable degree of overlap and repetition between the courses. We are, for example, investigating new course literature and restructuring topics between courses. This work is done by all the teachers of the optimization courses and assisted by a PhD student.
Changes to the course in 2026.
- Allocate an extra lecture to "Column Generation" and "Subgradient method for solving the Lagrangian dual".
- Transition more towards GAMSPy for the project. Some students have already used GAMSPy successfully for the projects this year. The students are more used to working in Python, which gives greater flexibility.
- Project 2 can be expanded slightly. The projects are of similar difficulty, but project 2 is perceived as easier by the students as they are then familiar with GAMS.
- Try to hand out project 1 a week earlier to give more time in between project 1 and 2.
- Introduce some new exercise questions for the last two exercise sessions.

TIEMMCourse analysis
Course analysis SF2812: 23 Apr 2025Changes introduced for this course offering
The main weakness identified in 2023 was the exercise sessions. Student participation was low in the exercise sessions, and from the students’ feedback, it seemed like there was not enough value in attending the exercise sessions. ------------------------------------------ We slightly changed the format of the exercise sessions, with the goal of “creating more value” for the students attending the exercise sessions. 1) The first change was to have the students try to solve some exercise questions independently with guidance from the TA:s for a part of the exercise sessions. I have seen this format being successful, for example, in courses with similar topics at Imperial College London. Answering questions and helping the students solve the exercise problems on their own requires two TAs to be effective. 2) The second change was to allocate some time in two of the exercise sessions to cover some “advanced bonus topics” that are strongly connected to the course, but not covered in the lectures, nor considered a part of the course. The idea was to have these topics to provide a bit more for the very ambitious students. But, we also made it clear that these “advanced bonus topics” will not be in the exam. --------------------------------- Besides the changes to the exercise sessions and new project assignments, the course was given in a similar format as last year (the feedback in 2023 about the lectures and course format was very positive).Examination grade
