Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

This course is intended to help students prepare for academic studies in scientific and technical domains with English as the language of instruction. This course includes reflection and discussion, reading and listening comprehension, and writing and video assignments. The focus throughout the cours is on clear, concise and precise English. Students can expect training in and personal feedback on:

  • scientific English
  • language and discourse analysis
  • effective peer review

Intended learning outcomes

In a language-focused learning environment and with course participants from different technical disciplines, the students learn both the mechanics of English and strategies to communicate their technical knowledge in clear, concise, and precise English.

More exactly, the students should be able to do the following on completion of the course:

  1. identify the principles and conventions for scientific discourse in English, and be to apply them in academic contexts
  2. adapt their scientific communication to different academic audiences
  3. apply academic English to scientific disciplines
  4. communicate technical knowledge and their own ideas in academic contexts

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
