Background:
Digitalization is having a broad impact. With modern technology for measurement and monitoring, large amounts of information can be collected by various systems in society. This project focuses on physical facilities ("assets") that are equipped with sensors and monitoring equipment and where collected data can then be analyzed with advanced methods for data analysis and machine learning.
The purpose of the project is to study how socially important infrastructure systems, e.g. urban water and sewage systems, can be made more sustainable and socially efficient through the introduction of new "smart" technologies in the systems' operation and maintenance. With the help of comparative studies of the introduction of smart technologies and methods in different infrastructure systems, the intention is to develop knowledge about how the smart technologies can be utilized in the best possible way and what effect they have on existing and future business models. Examples of questions are: how should all collected data be used? What analyzes should be done? And how can the new "smart" technology be used to increase efficiency, create new services and develop new business?
The overall purpose is to develop knowledge that enables the lead time between an investment in new “smart” technology and productivity increases to be shortened.
