Bachelor thesis in Naval Architecture

The Bachelor thesis course is a leap into the complex engineering field of Naval Architecture. Currently, our focus areas are sailing ships, sea properties and ship dynamics, marine composite structures and underwater engineering.

The bachelor thesis project assignments, which the students choose at the start of the course, usually relate to the research areas. In recent years, KEx has dealt with ship stability in waves, underwater noise, propeller design for underwater vehicles, wave height measurement with mobile phone sensors, rudder system for autonomous sailboat, wing configuration for wind tunnel model of sailing ship. Many tasks lead to experimental analysis or a verifying prototype to show the solution, some tasks are fine without.

The course is structured with a framework of common activities that aim to support the work on the project, and to develop engineering skills towards the course learning objectives, e.g. in terms of problem formulation, project planning and continuous project accounting, report writing, oral presentation and review of technical work. In addition to the project supervisor, you will meet teachers from KTH's Naval Architecture research group and engineers from the marine engineering industry at guest lectures, study visits or project meetings as part of the joint framework activities.

The thesis project is concluded with an oral presentation at the annual student conference (Naval Technology Days) where the students present their results together with master students who present degree projects or course projects. The conference is an exciting opportunity to discuss your work with other students and with the audience who are invited from the naval industry, design-, consultancy- and construction companies and authorities with various links to naval technology.
