Swedish personal identity number and ID card

Your personal identity number is widely used for everyday purposes in Swedish society, such as dealing with authorities, accessing health care, applying for a Swedish ID card and joining an insurance plan. Here you can read about how to register with the Swedish Tax Agency and once registered you will receive the Swedish personal identity number. You will also find information on how to submit it to KTH and how to get your Swedish ID card.

International students who are staying for one year or more are usually required to register as a resident in the Swedish population register. The Swedish Tax Agency will record details such as your name, address, date of birth and civil status and you will receive a unique Swedish personal identity number.

1. Register with the Swedish Tax Agency

To become registered with the Swedish Tax Agency, you must apply in person at the nearest office of the Swedish state service center. You must show a registration certificate or other document confirming your enrolment for a recognised educational programme. A certificate of anticipated participation may suffice, but please confirm with the Swedish Tax Agency what documents are required in your case. Please also show your admission notice that confirm you have been offered a place. Course registration  for new students takes place after arriving to KTH.

Students who have a residence permit valid for less than 12 months, cannot register as a resident in the Swedish population register.

Interim personal identity number (T-number)

The personal identity number issued by the Swedish Tax Agency should not be confused with your interim personal identity number, also known as your T-number. The interim personal identity number is your unique number in the student documentation system and is assigned to you by KTH. It usually consists of your date of birth, followed by the letter T (in some cases, a different letter than T can occur) and three digits (YYMMDD-TXXX).

Your interim personal identity number is limited to university administrative purposes, and cannot be used in contact with other authorities in Sweden. Before arrival to KTH, you can log in to Ladok with your University admissions account details and upon arrival to KTH, after activating your KTH account, you can log in with the KTH account details and find your interim personal identity number displayed in Ladok , at the bottom of the menu and in your transcripts and certificates.

2. Apply for a Swedish ID card

We recommend that you apply for a Swedish ID card via the Swedish Tax Agency when you have received your Swedish personal identity number. Having an ID card that shows your Swedish personal identity number will be helpful, for example when identifying yourself during an examination at KTH. The tax agency ID card is an approved form of identification in Sweden and can be used as proof of your age and identity at places such as KTH, banks, pharmacies and health care clinics.
