New platform for KTH lecturers in Shanghai

Published Jun 24, 2010

The Nordic Center at the Chinese Fudan University has built new premises for teaching and research. Lecturers and students from KTH and other Nordic universities will now have completely new opportunities to work at the well-reputed University in Shanghai.

KTH and several other Nordic universities established cooperation with Fudan University several years ago. Through the Nordic Center organization, access has now been provided to completely new teaching and research premises.

- The new building will be a natural platform where our lecturers can practice their teaching and cooperate with colleagues from other Nordic countries and with their Chinese colleagues on site, says the Deputy President of KTH, Eva Malmström Jonsson, who participated at the inauguration of the premises on Wednesday.

The Nordic countries’ universities previously had access to two small rooms at Fudan University, whereas they now have 400 square metres of premises at their disposal. The newly constructed premises have a library, lecture halls, offices, a seminar room, and recreational environments, including a café.

- This paves the way to completely new opportunities for university activities here. The Nordic cooperation program can now widen its subject areas and more easily expand activities within the technological and scientific area, says Eva Malmström Jonsson.

Every year more than 3000 international students read at Fudan University, and about 80 come from Nordic countries. KTH has had a student exchange programme with Fudan University for a number of years now. Students from KTH also participate in summer courses arranged by the Nordic Center at Fudan every year.

According to Chen Yinzhang, MD of the Nordic Center, the new premises will be a natural meeting place for Swedish-Chinese exchange students:

– It will be a natural place of introduction for the Nordic students who come to Fudan. For Chinese students who are on the way to an exchange place in the Nordic countries, the center can give them a taste of what it is like to study at a Nordic university, he says.

The new buildings have been financed by the five Nordic countries’ governments and several private sponsors. Government representatives were present at the official inauguration on Wednesday.

The Nordic Center at Fudan University will be celebrating its 15 year jubilee this year. There are a total of 26 Nordic university members in the network.
