MULTICLIMACT: A European initiative to protect built environment against natural and climate threats

25th of October 2023 marks the unveiling of an ambitious and innovative European project, MULTICLIMACT, designed to revolutionize the protection of the built environment against locally relevant natural and climatic hazards. This collaborative initiative is set to advance resilience, sustainability, and safety for communities throughout the European region.

On the 25th of October, 23 European organisations met in Milan to launch the EU-funded project MULTICLIMACT.

The MULTICLIMAT project is a 3 ½ year-long initiative funded by the European Union that aims to analyse the ongoing climate change, including heatwaves, droughts, and floods, and their impact on the built environment of European cities and national critical infrastructure. The main deliverable of the project is the CREMA toolkit, which will be used by public decision-makers to evaluate the resilience of built environments against climate change, as well as the impacts of design and planning methods, materials, technologies, and digital solutions.

KTH will participate to the project, with Dr Luca Urciuoli from INDEK as Principal Investigator Dr Qian Wang from ABE, and 2 PhD students, Ari C.G. Prasetia at INDEK, and Giorgos Aspetakis, ABE.

The scope of their work will be:

  1. to analyse and develop design methods for ensuring robust and resilient supply chains for the built environment, and
  2. to assess life cycle and evaluate the feasibility of selected technologies aiming to control climate indoor conditions.

Key objectives of the MULTICLIMACT project include:

  • Innovative Risk Assessment and Prediction: The project will harness the latest advancements in data analytics, modelling, and predictive technologies to better anticipate and respond to natural and climatic threats.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: MULTICLIMACT brings together experts from diverse fields such as architecture, engineering, climatology, and disaster management to ensure a holistic approach to resilience-building.
  • Community Engagement and Education: The project is dedicated to fostering public awareness and engagement, empowering communities to take an active role in safeguarding their built environment.
