FOCUSE: Food production through Circular Urban Systems in European Cities

FOCUSE is an initiative aimed at transforming food production in urban environments across Europe.

Project Overview

FOCUSE explores innovative approaches to integrate circular economy principles into urban food systems. Our research focuses on developing sustainable, resource-efficient methods for producing food within European urban areas.

Key Objectives:

  • Analyse current urban food production systems

  • Envision circular food production systems in European cities through utilization of residuals and urban symbiosis

  • Experiment and analyse the use of urban residuals for food production

  • Investigate energy-efficient growing techniques and urban infrastructure integration

  • Assess the environmental impact of circular urban food production and farming methods

Our Approach

Through a combination of exploratory visions, studying the potential, laboratory research and real-world trials, we're exploring:

  • Innovative use of urban waste as growing media and substrates

  • Urban energy system and building integration for producing food

  • Optimized LED lighting for indoor farming

  • Smart sensors and AI for resource management

Impact

FOCUSE aims to contribute to urban food security, improve resource efficiency, and create more resilient cities. By bringing food production closer to consumers, we're working towards a more sustainable future for European cities and creating innovative approaches for valorising urban waste.
