Production/operations management has an evolutionary history spanning centuries. Newer debates/concepts/industrial practices have been developed. A broad spectrum of knowledge and conceptual advances (from tools to strategic thinking) have been realised over the years to address prevailing challenges. Challenges that recently become critical in global manufacturing value chains include widespread of unanticipated disruptions, the need to cut-back environmental impact as a result of production related activities and keeping competitive edge in the transformative changes driven by technological advances.
Using existing research and practical experience examples, I will discuss some debates and forward-looking perspectives in production management for the aspired transformation towards the vision of more sustainable, human-centered, technologically-enabled, and resilient manufacturing of the future.
Some examples of the research to be discussed in this lecture include the themes: research in the development of operations and supply chain resilience, design of manufacturing systems for sustainability and circularity, investigations towards development of small and medium industries for industry 5.0 context.
