Smart Sustainable Cities

In June 2013 KTH Energy Platform in cooperation with KTH Sustainability started a new initiative called KTH Smart Sustainable Cities aiming to combine resources, activities and competence at the intersection of technology, sustainability studies and urban planning.

The idea behind the initiative is to create a contact point at KTH to promote research, cooperation and networking in the field of Smart Sustainable Cities (SSC). It is coordinated by steering group with research leaders from five different KTH schools and is financed by KTH Energy Platform, KTH ICT Platform and KTH Sustainability.

The overall aim

To build capacity and critical mass in SSC research and innovation to enable a sustainability transition in cities worldwide.

The goals

  • To establish relationships and cooperation between actors around SSC research and innovation projects
  • To deepen and strengthen the scientific understanding on smart sustainable cities
  • To enable implementation of SSC technologies and solutions in Swedish test beds

Activities

The first activity of the initiative was development of a Strategic Innovation Agenda for Smart Sustainable Cities financed by VINNOVA and the Swedish Energy Agency. The release of agenda is planned for 2014. The initiative also started a network of PhD students and postdocs from KTH, working on Smart Sustainable Cities - "PhD Think Tank" - for exchange of experience and new ideas.
