CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR GRADUATION

Published Jun 05, 2014

Javier Ferrer Coll from Spain came to Sweden during his Master studies for some courses and to write his Master Thesis. After his graduation he was enrolled as a PhD student at KTH and now he has defended his thesis "Channel Characterization and Wireless Communication Performance in Industrial Environments".

PhD Javier Ferrer Coll

Where are you from and where did you study before coming to KTH?

– I am from Spain. I received a bachelor and master's degree in Telecommunications at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV). The last year of the master, I came to Sweden to study some courses and perform the master thesis via the Erasmus program. The thesis was performed at the Radio center of Gävle at Högskolan i Gävle.

What is your topic and why did you choose it?

– During my PhD I have studied the performance of wireless communications in industrial environments. I think that this topic is really interesting and has a great potential in the near future.

Describe your topic in short.

– We have performed measurements in multiple industrial environments such as rail yard (Green Cargo), paper mill (Stora Enso), steel mill (SSAB) and mine (LKAB). We found different sources of degradation depending on the environment structure, materials and electric elements present. For instance, electrical motors and transport can insert interference at frequency bands where wireless systems are used in the industry. With our research, we aim to identify the sources of degradation in different industrial environments and propose communication system more robust against these degradations.

Tell us something about your results.

– The product of our investigation provides a classification of multiple industrial environments which are affected by different sources of degradation. The result of our investigation can be used for wireless system developers to design robust communication systems in critical processes in the industry.

What will the future bring for your research topic?

– The demand of wireless systems in industrial environments is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years. Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication will allow a wide variety of devices to be interconnected providing new functionalities and increasing the efficiency of industrial processes. From my point of view, the main challenge in this area is the design of robust wireless communications in dense environments with heavy data rates while reducing the energy consumption of these autonomous wireless systems.

What are your plans for the future?

– I am planning to stay in Sweden with my family. Most probably, we will move to Stockholm area where most of the telecommunication companies in Sweden are placed.
