Summer school at Campus Flemingsberg – towards a better diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer
At the end of August, the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems organised a summer school as part of the Bosomshield project at KTH’s campus in Flemingsberg. Bosomshield is an EU-funded project aimed at performing image analysis towards better diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
“Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. In this EU project, we combine different sources of knowledge: radiological and histopathological imaging, along with clinical data, for the detection and prediction of cancer relapse and recurrence. Our ambition in this project is to create new computational tools that can be used by medical professionals in their daily routine, aiming to reduce breast cancer mortality,” says Professor Rodrigo Moreno, who, together with Professor Örjan Smedby, was one of the main coordinators of the summer school.
Attending the summer school were PhD students from different universities within the EU, along with some of their supervisors. Apart from KTH speakers, there were invited speakers from Karolinska Institute and Lund University, as well as from universities and institutes in France, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Italy.
“I think we found a good balance between morning lectures and afternoon workshops. We had a session with leading clinical researchers that gave the students another perspective on their work,” says Rodrigo Moreno.
He emphasizes that the support from KTH library and KTH innovation was fantastic. The students were very active in all sessions of the school, which was very much appreciated by the speakers.
“All in all, I think this summer school was a big success, and we are looking forward to the next event on the network, which is a workshop in Dijon, France, next spring.”
