During the 17th century, Santorio was an important person in iatrophysics, a medical movement that explained life processes and diseases according to physical laws.

Santorio was a supporter of a mechanistic view of the human body and the most important methods for making a diagnosis was based on what was measurable, weighing and measuring. He was the first to use a clinical thermometer to measure the temperature of a human being.
