Hammarström was the first formally trained female Swedish chemist.

Louise Hammarström was the daughter of a priest. She became an orphan at an early age and grew up at an ironworks in Dalarna, where she became interested in chemical substances. She studied at Tekniska skolan and studied chemistry through private lessons. In 1875 she was employed as an assistant at the engineer Werner Cronquist's laboratory in Stockholm. Later she worked as a mineral chemist on various ironworks between the years 1887 and 1893. In 1893 she opened her own laboratory, focusing mainly on minerals and geological studies.
