James Watt

Watt became of great importance to the industrial revolution by improving steam engine performance.

In the mid-18th century, Watt opened a workshop at the University of Glasgow. When Watt worked on repairing a steam engine in 1764, he got the idea of how the construction of the steam engine could be improved. Watt developed a separate condenser, which caused the steam engine to become less energy consuming and could be used when there was a shortage of coal.
