Georgius Agricola

Georgius Agricola, was born in 1494 as Georg Bauer (the name was later latinized) and is often called the father of mineralogy and metallurgy. He studied medicine and was active as a physician, but at an early age devoted himself to metallurgy and mineralogy and made a fundamental attempt at a new type of classification of fossils, minerals and rocks based on their physical properties.

His perhaps best-known work, De re metallica from 1556, contains a complete representation of contemporary mining and metallurgy and served as a standard work for several centuries.
