She was active in Aleppo, in present-day northern Syria. She and her father were apprentices to the astrolabe maker Nasṭūlus from Baghdad. She worked under Sayf al-Dawla, the first Emir of Aleppo, who reigned between 944 and 967.

The name 'Mariam,' sometimes used to refer to her in modern literature, is not mentioned in the historical sources documenting her life. 'Al-Asturlabiyy' means 'the astrolabe maker' and refers to her profession.

In her honor, the asteroid 7060 Al-ʻIjliya was named, and she has inspired characters in books and TV series, including the award-winning book Binti and the Netflix series Vikings: Valhalla.
