Research project on climate change in freight transport in southern Stockholm
A project is currently underway to create a sustainable logistics system for freight transport in southern Stockholm via nodes such as ports. The aim is to contribute to streamlining the transport system in the region.
The overall goal is to contribute with knowledge to change the transport sector so that Sweden can reach its goal of becoming one of the world's first fossil-free welfare countries in 2045.
Central to the project is Norvik's port in Nynäshamn
At the center of the project is the newly established port in Norvik at Nynäshamn. There, shipping is tied together with ports and terminals, as well as road and rail transport with important nodes for logistics areas as well as trade areas. Road 73 and the Nynäsbanan run north from Norvik harbor towards Stockholm via several of these nodes. Road 259, Södertörnsleden, is also an important part of the project's geography.
Focus on multimodal logistics chains
Digital Transport Southern Stockholm (DTSS), as the project is called, focuses on multimodal logistics chains, i.e. how a transport can use several different modes of transport to reach its final destination and how digitalisation, automation and electrification can contribute to creating smart multimodal logistics systems. Participating partners are Lindholmen Science Park, KTH and the Swedish Transport Administration as well as actors such as Einride, Ericsson and the Port of Stockholm.
KTH participates in several parts of the research project
An key part of the project that KTH is responsible for is the analysis and simulation phase which will form the basis for concrete measures by infrastructure managers, commodity owners, telecom operators and energy market players to adapt their planning and their range of services to be able to respond to customer needs for digitization. Workshops with focus groups consisting of different stakeholders are also conducted by KTH with the aim of seeing which stakeholders have a direct influence on each other and then define how their sub-developments influence and need to influence each other.
