Minor field studies (MFS) in Africa

Published May 04, 2017

SIDA funded program

KTH dESA is gladly supervising twelve undergraduate students at KTH, who are currently conducting field studies in five African countries through a SIDA  funded program (MFS). Here are Emelie Johnson and Josefine Axelsson who visit Rwanda for 8 weeks investigating energy sector development issues in the country. Their research strives to provide answer(s) to the following questions:

  • What is the role of hydropower in Rwanda’s electrification plans?
  • What are the critical elements in land irrigation and how does water availability affect the agricultural output in the country?
  • What are the linkages between water use for electricity production (hydropower) and irrigation (agriculture)? Any hot spots and conflict zones?
  • How should water be utilized more effectively in the country in order to achieve its targets both in regards with energy and food demand?
  • How does climate change impact the energy sector dynamics in the country?

Findings of this work are expected to contribute in the elaboration of their BSc thesis.
