SIDA funded program

On May 29, four groups of Bachelor students presented the work developed for their thesis projects under the SIDA funded Minor Field Study (MFS) Program. The students work focused on the analysis of the energy system of their respective countries with an emphasis on the interactions with nexus systems of water, land use and climate.

Amber Ahmed and Jindan Gong, as well as Hanna Hammerstein and Jenny Fu, travelled to Ghana and focused on the analysis of the electricity system in terms of the potential increase of the use of renewable energy technologies and the impact of climate change in the generation of hydropower. Obiora Okolo and Haoran Teng investigated deforestation and its connections to the energy and cooking sector in Nigeria. Emelie Johnson and Josefine Axelsson visited Rwanda for two months and investigated energy sector development issues in the country. Their research focused on the role of hydropower in Rwanda’s electrification plans and the impact of climate change in the sector’s dynamics over the coming years.

In addition, Frida Jalkenäs and Monika Mizgalewicz spent about 10 weeks in Ethiopia where they produced energy investment outlooks investigating a plethora of scenarios based on national strategies and aspirations. Anna Berggren and Sara Österberg carried out a field study on Kenya. They developed an integrated analysis, coupling a GIS based electrification tool (OnSSET) with a power investment tool (OSeMOSYS) and a water management tool (WEAP).

The reports will soon become available in the KTH repository.
