Jorge Cham gave a talk on the topic ”The Power of Procrastination”, then he signed his books and finally the PhD movie was screened. Jorge Cham obtained a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, specializing in Robotics in 2005. During his PhD studies he started to draw Piled Higher and Deeper and since five years he is now working full time with the comic strip, which this year also became a movie completely made by PhD students. The 220 seats were sold out quickly when the event was announced and Jorge also sold out of his books at the event. The audience seemed to enjoy the evening as well and laughed of recognition at Jorge Chams jokes when he talked about life as a PhD student.
Jorge Cham is now on a three months tour, visiting universities all over the world to give his talk and show the movie.
- The comics are appreciated all over the world. Everyone says that they find it funny and can relate to the characters. I think academia is very international and is becoming more and more unified. Any place that have the research, working with professors and publishing papers have most things in common, said Jorge Cham after his talk.
Jorge Cham is also very satisfied with the PhD movie and liked to work with it as much as he like to draw his comic strips.
- I think there will be a sequel. We want to do more, for sure.
And judging by the applause the film got at KTH Kista the graduate students at KTH would like a follow-up as well.
