Congratulations on your graduation PhD Boatao Shao

Botao Shao came to KTH from Fudan Univeristy in China. He has spent his doctoral years on studying fully printed chipless RFID tags towards item-level tracking applications. Last week he defended his PhD thesis and will now use his knowledges on his new position at ABB.

Where are you from and where did you study before coming to KTH?

– ​I am from the Anhui Province in China, not far away from Shanghai. Prior to the stay at KTH School of Information and Communication Technology, I studied at Fudan University, China.

What is your topic and why did you choose it?

– My topic is the study of fully printed chipless RFID tags towards item-level tracking applications. It is an emerging inter-discipline as a convergence of radio electronics, wireless communication technologies, material science and ​printing technologies. I chose this topic as it is not only interesting but also promising to realize real-time tracking and identification of consumer goods in the context of Internet-of-Things.

Describe your topic in short.

– ​The goal is simple, just to make RFID tags ultra inexpensive (sub-cent level) to meet the demand of item-level tracking applications. However, to achieve this, it is required for us to come up with innovative solutions in various aspects, including removal of costly silicon chips and battery, use of high throughput printing technologies, and exploitation of inexpensive paper substrates.

Tell me something about your results.

– We realized some key building blocks for the design and production of chipless RFID tags. For instance, we proposed a tapering RFID antenna that can reduce material cost by 40% without significant degradation in performance. The time-domain chipless RFID tags we presented can realize multiple coding capacity, almost 6 times larger than the counterparts. We also for the first time realized the direct printing of a chipless RFID tag on inexpensive packaging paper substrates.

What will the future bring for your research topic?

​​– The future of research topic will be mainly on how to continuously enhance the coding capability of chipless RFID tags, and how to produce these chipless RFID tags at cheaper cost.

What are your plans for the future?

– ​Now I have got a position in ABB working with Electromagnetic Compatibility designs. ​Luckily the knowledge I have learned at KTH can be used to solve the technical problems that are more realistic. In the near future I will stay in Sweden, working and learning more.
